The National Institute for Computational Sciences (NICS) is funded by the National Science Foundation to support research at US Universities. Most of the NICS resources are committed as part of the TeraGrid allocation process. However, NICS can make some Director Discretionary awards to State of Tennessee researchers and others.

The standard Director Discretionary allocation is for 200,000 processor-hours for a year. Requests up to 500,000 hours with strong justification will be considered. Larger awards are not likely to be made. However, the TeraGrid provides an opportunity to receive a much larger award.

As part of a Director Discretionary award, we will ask that you provide:

  • Periodic reports on your progress
  • Content for a slide which includes an image and statement of scientific impact
  • Response to periodic surveys regarding your experience

Instructions:

This form allows you to request a Director's discretionary account on the Kraken system. You may also follow this link and request a TeraGrid account.

  • Fill in all applicable information.
  • Click on "submit" button at bottom of this page to submit your application.

1. Personal Information
If you have dual citizenship with United States enter USA
2. Address
3. Organization
4. Project Description
Assigned user names may vary. Please enter 4 to 8 characters
For NEW projects select "self". For any existing project select the PI from the list.
If this is a new project select "New", otherwise, select the correct project name from the list. PIs are listed after the project name.
Required Item for new project requests: If this Item is not completed , NICS cannot process the Application
To be completed by PI requesting a new project
5. Project Requirements
Only complete this section if you are a PI requesting a new project                                                                      Skip block 5 if you are requesting an account on an existing project
Select one or multiple languages. If computations require extensive use of languages other than those listed please comment below.
Please explain projected Allocation requirements, and post-processing requirements for the project. Will the project consist of long running jobs with relatively few cores, or shorter jobs with more processors. Will your job require significant I/O?
Why does your project merit these resources? What are your goals for this project? Please note: Justification for "New" requests is required.
